Ghazali’s “Banes of the Tongue” for families, Parts 1 through 4, read aloud

The following story is based on Imam al-Ghazali’s ‘The Banes of the Tongue’, Book 24 in his magnificent work, the Revival of the Religious Sciences, and has been adapted for families. It is a forthcoming title from the Fons Vitae Ghazali Children’s project.

In the following four videos, the founder and Director of Fons Vitae, Virginia Gray Henry, reads the book aloud, accompanied by many beautiful color illustrations from the book for the entire family, and at times provides her own commentary and perspective.

Ghazali’s Banes of the Tongue for the family, Part 1 of 4 addresses the virtue of not speaking, along with the banes of superfluous talk, speaking about what does not concern you, vain talk, and arguing.

Ghazali’s Banes of the Tongue for the family, Parts 2 of 4 addresses the banes of legal disputation, pompous or extravagant language, as well as the banes of insult, cursing, hurtful joking, ridicule, divulging others’ secrets, and making false promises.

Ghazali’s Banes of the Tongue for the family, Parts 3 of 4 addresses the bane of lying in speech or oath, and the bane of backbiting.

Ghazali’s Banes of the Tongue for the family, Parts 4 of 4 addresses the banes of spreading what is untrue, speaking with two tongues, overdone praise, and the bane of discussing subtleties of faith without adequate knowledge.
